Política y Medicina: Escogiendo Neurocirujanos y Presidentes (inglés)
Por suerte, no he tenido que escoger a un neurocirujano aún. Pero si tuviese, yo tendría una cuidadosa lista de los criterios que tendrían que ser tomados en cuenta. Aquella lista tomaría varias cosas en consideración.
- ¿Qué entrenamiento, dónde y por quien ha tenido el individuo?
- ¿Cuanto ha estado él/ella trabajando en ello?
- ¿Cuál es su/su reputación entre sus iguales?
- ¿Cuáles son sus manías de cabecera?
- ¿Cómo trata él/ella mis preguntas y preocupaciones?
Finalmente, ¿¿qué hay sobre su experiencia??
David Brooks, un columnista del New York Times, advirtió en su editorial de ayer:
"…los fundadores usaron la palabra "experiencia" 91 veces en los periódicos Federalistas". Advirtió que "la democracia no es la gente promedio que selecciona a líderes promedio. Es la gente promedio con la sabiduría para seleccionar los mejor preparados". ¡Consejo sano!
Cuándo está seleccionando a un neurocirujano, o a un mecánico para reconstruir el motor de su coche o un líder sabio para controlar el país, ¿no piensa usted tomar en cuenta su experiencia? "Experentia docet" (la experiencia enseña) es la frase latina que todavía recuerdo del Instituto, cuando nosotros todavía teníamos la oportunidad de aprender lengua muertas.
Desde luego, la experiencia no es el único criterio. Como he advertido, un neurocirujano tiene que tener la habilidad, pero también la paciencia, y la bondad, y la preparación y la perspicacia y el conocimiento y la sabiduría y rectitud y sensibilidad y esperanza. Pensamos que estas son cualidades útiles en un político también.
Probablemente una de las características más importantes es que debe ser capaz de ser honesto y franco, decirme la verdad cuando tengo que oírla. Aunque puedo no gustar del mensaje, yo seguramente apreciaría y respetaría lo que alguien me dice que tengo que conocer. Soy absolutamente capaz de actuar sobre aquella información.
Por favor Sr. McCain, Sra. Palin, Sr. Obama y Sr. Biden: dígannos la verdad y seremos capaces de manejarla

Politics and Medicine - Choosing Brain Surgeons and Presidents
Fortunately, I haven’t had to choose a brain surgeon yet. But, if I did I would have a careful list of criteria that would need to be met. That list would take several things into account.
-What training, where and by whom has the individual had?
-How long has he/she been at it?
-What is his/her reputation among peers?
-What is his/her bedside manner?
-How does he/she deal with my questions and concerns?
Finally, what about EXPERIENCE?

So when selecting a brain surgeon or a mechanic to rebuild your car’s engine or a wise leader to run the country, don’t you think experience counts? Experentia docet (experience teaches) is the Latin phrase I still remember from High School, back when we still had the opportunity to learn the dead language.
Of course, experience alone is not the only criteria. As I have pointed out above, a brain surgeon needs to bring skill, but also patience, and kindness, and preparation and insight and knowledge and wisdom and forthrightness and sensitivity and hope. It seems these are qualities useful in a politician as well.
Probably one of the most important characteristics is to be able to be honest and straight forward, to tell the truth to me, when I need to hear it. While I may not like the message, I would surely appreciate and respect having someone tell me what I need to know. I am perfectly capable acting on that information.
Please Mr. McCain, Ms Palin, Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden tell us the truth and we will be able to handle it.
